5 hour inshore sound fishing trip
My buddy and I booked a last minute trip (day before) for half day with "The Hook Up" and Capt Rudy Gray. We caught 1 Red Drum in last 5 minutes of our 5 hour trip. That 1 fish was caught 5 minutes from the marina. We started the day with the plan of in the shallows and catch some puppy drum and as sun comes up go fish for the big Red's. We ended up driving about 1 1/2 hrs of our short trip and had a lot of time with lines OUT of the water. Seemed like the Capt really wasn't interested in helping us catch fish and making decisions quickly to find them. We kept fishing the same technique and same type of locations and the fish just weren't there or interested in biting. We didn't change technique or water type even though we had less than 6 total bites between the 2 of us. We drove around a lot and it just didn't work. The Capt. was calling the other Capt's to get information and follow besides understand the water, tide and fish and go get the fish first. BTW, none of the other Capt's were calling him while we were out. I'm sure the Capt catches fish but didn't see anything that would suggest he could catch fish when there was few bites and on a consistent basis. After the worst fishing guided day I've ever had, we thought that maybe it was just a bad fishing day. But after we check the daily fishing report for Hatteras Harbor on night of our trip, appears that all the other inshore boats out the same day caught "Red Drum limits and big ones too!" I understand fishing is fishing but when you pay $350 for a half day, you'd expect that an experienced guide would be able to get at least a few fish "Hooked Up". Looking at the marina's historical fishing reports for inshore, Tightlines seems like a very consistent guide on the citation boards. Also, when my buddy and I were back at dock and exiting the boat, the Capt was more interested in giving us his marketing magnets for our beach house than being sympathetic to for not putting us on fish.
