8 Hour Offshore
I booked a full day charter with Captain Sig. From the moment I set foot on the boat, I could tell it was going to be a fun day. Sig has an incredibly laid back, come have some fun attitude. With the inshore reports being pretty weak, Sig took us about halfway to Bimini - which is still a short trip within sight of the Miami skyline! While I'm used to offshore fishing off Cape Cod for bluefin tuna, this was my first offshore fishing trip out of Florida. Sig wanted to make sure I got some variety in, so we did half a day of trolling, and half a day of sailfishing. Sig's mate, Chris, got the rods set, and about 5 minutes in, the short rod bent over. A couple minutes later, we had our first wahoo in the boat. We got three mahi mahi in the boat (and lost another) before taking off for some sailfishing. We put the baits out, and the waiting began. One of the baits started getting nervous, and then the sailfish broke the surface about 20 feet behind the boat. I grabbed the rod, and started the fight. Seconds later, another rod bent down and my friend grabbed hold of it, and the sailfish started dancing about 100 feet off the stern. We had a double on! Unfortunately, I lost mine very shortly after I hooked it, but my friend was able to keep his on a while longer. Fate wasn't on our side though, and about 5 minutes in, the sailfish broke free. We reset the baits for the last hour and a half before the rod dipped one more time. It wasn't a sailfish, but we still had a great fight on a Silky Shark. Sig was great about making sure we had a good time, even though in Sig's words, the fishing was slow (we couldn't tell!). Next time I make my way down to Miami, I'll definitely be giving Sig another call!
