About

Islamorada fishing in the Florida Keys is excellent. Capt. Rick Killgore will take you fishing with expertise and enthusiasm! Experienced anglers can rely on his skills and knowledge. Rick personally had two "IGFA WORLD RECORDS caught on fly fishing tackle. Novice anglers will appreciate his patience and assistance. Women and children are welcome. Light tackle and fly fishing instruction are just two of his specialties (and he makes all his own flies). Rick started professional fishing in 1978 before his 16th birthday, and grew up fishing the flats and offshore waters of Key Biscayne, Miami. He finally landed in Islamorada in 1995 after charter fishing Costa Rica (as featured in Salt Water Sportsman, March 1991), St. Thomas, Mexico, Bahamas, and South Florida. Rick found the truth in Islamorada's reputation as "The Sports Fishing Capital of the World." Many IGFA world records have been caught here. The fish Rick targets are prolific. There is an incredible variety of fish and fishing: from the flats, to the offshore, to the reef, to the Everglades, and out to the wrecks of the Gulf of Mexico. Islamorada fishing is year round, but there are seasonal migrations both offshore and on the flats. So if you want to target specific fish or can only travel on a specific date, check out his website's page fishing seasons for an explanation or contact him directly.

Full Day Charter
I called up Captain Rick for a last minute trip over Labor Day weekend. My girlfriend wanted to catch dinner, but also didn't really want to spend an entire day fishing. I called up Rick originally looking for just a half day, but while talking to him, he told me about all the other activities he does: snorkeling, spearfishing, lobstering, diving - basically anything we want to do. That easily convinced me to book the full day instead. We spent the first few hours snorkeling and enjoying the scenery while hunting for lobster. Rick showed us how to catch lobster, but unfortunately the jellyfish moved in before we could find some to try for ourselves. Afterwards we went out to the wrecks to drop for some grouper or snapper. We had a bite on every single drop we did, but unfortunately we lost every suspected grouper and snapper. We still had a blast catching a bunch of sharks and bonito. After that, we went off to the reef to troll for some cero mackerel. We got tons of blow ups on our baits, but only put the hook into one. Suddenly, though, my bait started getting nervous. A sail appeared behind the bait, and next thing I know, Captain Rick sets the hook on a giant sailfish! I fought it for about thirty seconds, but unfortunately it threw the hook on a tailwalk. I had a fantastic time with Rick. He was willing to teach you as much as you wanted, or to simply do it for you. Rick even stayed out for some extra time since he wanted to put us on some food fish. If you want a great guide that loves being on the water and teaching people, I highly recommend Rick.
